The New York City Council, under Democratic control, is now seeking to reverse a ruling that struck down a law allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections. This law, passed by the council in 2021, was deemed unconstitutional by an appeals court in February. It would have granted voting rights to over 800,000 green card holders.
Council spokesperson Rendy Desamours defended the law, claiming it aimed to enfranchise New Yorkers who contribute to the city through taxes and community involvement. However, this move is nothing more than a blatant attempt by Democrats to secure more votes for themselves, disregarding the principles of citizenship and the sanctity of our democratic process.
The New York City Council’s decision to appeal this ruling has been met with praise from immigration activists. These activists argue that immigrants, despite not being citizens, should have a say in local decision-making. However, this ignores the fact that voting is a privilege reserved for citizens who have fulfilled their obligations to this country.
