NYC Mayor Adams Takes Legal Action Against Texas Bus Companies for Transporting Migrants, Seeks $700 Million

Texas bus company Roadrunner Charters has agreed to halt the transportation of illegal migrants from Texas to New York City, following a lawsuit filed by Mayor Eric Adams. The lawsuit, brought by the New York City Department of Social Services, alleges that Roadrunner Charters and 16 other companies violated state law by not covering the costs of caring for migrants. The lawsuit seeks $708 million in damages.

In response to the agreement, Mayor Adams expressed satisfaction, stating that the bus company’s actions were an attempt to overwhelm the city’s shelter system. He emphasized that New York City is doing its part to manage the national humanitarian crisis but will not tolerate “reckless political games” from the state of Texas.

Mayor Adams had initially filed the lawsuit in January, citing the bussing of migrants as a “reckless political ploy.” He argued that while New York City is committed to addressing the crisis, it cannot bear the financial burden alone. The lawsuit targets companies involved in Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s alleged scheme to transport thousands of migrants to New York City, thereby straining the city’s social services system.

The agreement with Roadrunner Charters is seen as a positive development in the ongoing legal battle. Mayor Adams called on other bus companies named in the lawsuit to follow suit and halt their transportation of migrants. He firmly criticized Governor Abbott’s actions, labeling them chaotic, inhumane, and driven by political motivations.
