Former U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret and combat veteran Derrick Anderson has received another endorsement in his bid to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., announced his support for Anderson, stating that he is the conservative choice for the district. Scalise praised Anderson’s service to the country and expressed confidence in his ability to bring common sense back to America. Anderson’s campaign focuses on securing the U.S. border, supporting veterans, supporting Israel, and lowering costs for the working and middle class.
Anderson has garnered support from various House leaders, including Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., and Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pa. In addition to House GOP leadership, Anderson has also received endorsements from veterans currently serving in Congress, such as Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., and Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., among others.
Having served in the Army from 2006 to 2016 and deployed on multiple tours of duty in the Middle East, Anderson brings a wealth of experience to his campaign. He launched his congressional bid in September and narrowly lost the Republican primary in 2022. However, he remains determined to flip Virginia’s 7th Congressional District from blue to red.
Republicans are targeting Virginia’s 7th Congressional District as one of their top priorities in the 2024 elections. With Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., currently holding the seat, Republicans see an opportunity to strengthen their narrow majority in the House. Spanberger, a former CIA operative, narrowly secured her third term in the general election by defeating Anderson’s primary opponent. However, she has announced that she will not seek re-election and instead plans to run for governor of the state.
The Republican Party aims to build on their slim three-seat majority in the House of Representatives in the upcoming elections. They hope to capitalize on the unpopularity of President Biden and gain more seats in the chamber. In the 2022 midterm elections, the party won control of the House but fell short of expectations.
Anderson’s campaign, backed by House leadership and fellow veterans, presents a strong conservative choice for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.
