Florida Leads the Way in Tackling Squatter Problem

The bill, which permits police to immediately remove squatters without a lease authorized by the property owner, has received widespread support from homeowners like Patti Peeples.

Peeples, a Democrat and homeowner who has personally experienced the challenges posed by squatters, expressed her satisfaction with the new legislation during an interview on “The Big Money Show.” She commended Florida for taking a legal approach to dealing with squatters, rather than resorting to vigilante justice. Peeples believes that Florida is leading the nation in this regard and setting an example for others to follow.

Under the current law, landlords often have to endure lengthy and costly legal battles to remove squatters from their properties. However, House Bill 621 streamlines the process by giving police the authority to evict squatters immediately. It also imposes criminal penalties on squatters, including misdemeanor charges for squatting or presenting a false lease and felony charges for causing significant damage to the property.

Peeples, who recorded a confrontation with two female squatters on her property, emphasized the importance of the new legislation. She noted that if House Bill 621 had been in effect at the time, she would have been able to charge the intruders with felonies and misdemeanors, saving her weeks of turmoil and $40,000 in damages.

Contrary to political divisions, Peeples emphasized that addressing the issue of squatters is a matter of people’s rights. She argued that individuals should have the ability to access and utilize their own property, regardless of their political affiliations.

The problem of squatters has become increasingly prevalent in the post-pandemic environment, where rising housing costs have made it easier for people to exploit squatters’ rights. Peeples called on citizens across the United States to contact their representatives and senators, urging them to take action on this pressing issue.

As House Bill 621 awaits Governor Ron DeSantis’ signature, it also includes provisions that allow wrongfully evicted tenants to sue for access restoration, attorneys’ fees, and damages. This comprehensive approach aims to protect the rights of both property owners and tenants, creating a fair and balanced solution to the squatter problem.
