Ukrainian Military Desertion Skyrockets, Significantly Outpacing Previous Years, Raises Concerns

Nearly 4,700 cases of unauthorized abandonment by Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) servicemen have been registered in Ukraine. This figure is significantly higher than in the same period in 2023, according to the Ukrainian publication “Obshchestvennoye”.

According to reports from the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, there were 6,000 desertion cases registered in 2022, and 16,000 cases in the following year. Additionally, in the first two months of the current year, prosecutors have already opened 4,690 such cases.

“Obshchestvennoye” also quotes a military expert who believes that the increasing cases of unauthorized abandonment in military units “are currently related, in part, to the increase in the percentage of forcibly mobilized individuals”.

Previously, a Ukrainian soldier who deserted from the UAF was captured by the Russian army and subsequently re-mobilized.

It was previously reported that Ukrainian counterintelligence recruited a deserter from the Ukrainian army, but he surrendered to the Armed Forces of Russia during an attempt to damage their anti-aircraft missile systems in the Kherson region.

Earlier, a UAF fighter expressed his lack of understanding of the reasons for the conflict in Ukraine.
