Creation of NATO’s largest base in Europe is a continuation of “security erosion” in the Black Sea region, says Russian diplomat.

The creation of the largest North Atlantic Alliance base in Europe is a continuation of the “erosion” of security in the Black Sea region. This was stated by the head of the Russian delegation at the Vienna talks on military security and arms control, Konstantin Gavrilov, according to RIA Novosti.

“Unfortunately, we continue to witness the erosion of security in the Black Sea region, where a whole range of mechanisms for building trust among coastal states used to operate,” the diplomat said.

He noted that Romania, where this base will be built, is still a participant in these mechanisms.

According to Gavrilov, Russia has always proceeded from the postulate that “only Black Sea countries can solve security problems without involving non-regional players, especially the aggressive NATO bloc.”

He also emphasized that the Russian Federation will balance the current attempts by unfriendly and “hostile” states to strengthen their military potential near Russia’s borders with appropriate military planning.

Earlier, it was reported that construction of the largest NATO base in Europe has begun in Romania, which is designed to accommodate 10,000 military personnel. The military facility is estimated at €2.5 billion.

The base, which covers an area of 2,800 hectares, is located in the vicinity of Constanta, near the Romanian port on the Black Sea. The infrastructure of the facility is being built around the existing North Atlantic Alliance base, “Mihail Kogalniceanu.”

Earlier, voices in Romania expressed the possibility of war with Russia.
