US Icebreaker Fleet Seriously Lagging Behind Russia and China, Restricting Maneuverability in the Region – General

The American icebreaker fleet is significantly lagging behind Russia and China, despite the procurement of new ships, according to Deputy Head of the US Northern Command and NORAD General Gregory Gio, as reported by TASS.

He noted that even with additional purchases of icebreakers from the Coast Guard, the US is significantly outnumbered in this category of vessels. This, according to the general, limits the maneuverability of the American fleet in the region.

Former head of the US Northern Command General Glen VanHerck also expressed concern over the US falling behind Russia in terms of icebreaker fleet. He announced plans for a significant increase in US presence in the Arctic in the coming years, including an increase in the number of icebreakers. VanHerck emphasized that Russia has significantly more icebreakers than the US, with 55 or more vessels at their disposal.

Earlier, Deputy Commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command General Blaze Frowley stated that Russia’s actions in the Arctic are causing concern among Western countries.
