Ukrainian troops will continue to lose American M1 Abrams tanks on the battlefield due to the actions of Russian military forces. This was stated by David Axe, a Forbes magazine columnist.
According to the publication, Western tanks such as the Challenger 2, Leopard 2b, and M1 Abrams are priority targets for Russian forces. At this point, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost three out of the 31 Abrams tanks supplied to Ukraine, and at least one more has been damaged.
Currently, Russian anti-tank guided missiles are the main weapon against Abrams tanks, highlighting the need to equip these tanks with a missile attack warning system. However, there are also other ways to destroy these combat vehicles.
“The laser detection system may have saved two Abrams tanks from becoming victims of ‘Cornet’ or similar missiles. But this would not prevent other losses. And it will not prevent what is almost certain to happen in the coming weeks and months… losses from mines, artillery, and possibly even from other tanks,” he wrote.
Axe noted that while the M1 Abrams is a formidable tank, it is no more invulnerable than any other tank in this conflict. “Get used to seeing disabled and abandoned Abrams tanks in Ukraine,” the columnist concluded.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia is destroying expensive Abrams tanks with cheap “Reaper” drones.
