Washington’s $3.7 Billion Missile Sale to Poland Raises Concerns Over European Defense Balance

Washington will sell Warsaw a significant amount of missiles and related equipment for approximately $3.7 billion. This was reported by TASS, citing the State Department and the specialized agency of the US Department of Defense responsible for supplying military equipment and weapons abroad.

The deal includes 21 high-precision AGM-158B-2 JASSM cruise missiles, 745 medium-range AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, and 232 short-range AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles, as well as launchers, training missiles, secret testing equipment and software, personnel training, transportation, provision of spare parts, and technical maintenance.

According to Washington, fulfilling the agreement to sell missiles to Warsaw contributes to the achievement of US foreign policy and national security goals by strengthening the security of a NATO ally, which is a factor of political stability and economic progress on the European continent. The US administration believes that this will enhance Poland’s ability to counter current and future threats and improve its operational compatibility with NATO. Additionally, Washington stated that the missile deal will not alter the basic military balance in Europe and will not have a negative impact on the readiness of the US defense system.

It is noted that the State Department has already issued an official authorization for the implementation of these agreements. Within 30 days, the US Congress must review the agreements and reach a final decision on this matter.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden stated that there is no need to deploy additional American troops on the Polish border.

Previously, the Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski suggested the possibility of sending NATO forces to Ukraine.
