Greek Defense Minister Announces Creation of “Anti-Drone Dome” to Counter Bayraktar Drones – Defense Reform Agenda 2030 Underway

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos has announced the creation of an “anti-drone dome” in an interview with Naftemporiki. This move comes as Greece aims to catch up with neighboring countries and establish a defense system against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within its territory. Panagiotopoulos cited Azerbaijan’s widespread use of Turkish Bayraktar drones as an example of the need for such a system.

The minister also revealed plans for a military reform called “Agenda 2030.” This reform aims to expand arms production, change the length of military service, and create an innovative ecosystem within the Greek armed forces. The first step in building this ecosystem involves allocating a portion of the defense budget exclusively for the production of Greek defense products. To support the development of this ecosystem, the Greek Center for Innovative Development will be established.

It is worth noting that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis previously referred to Russia as an “enemy” of Europe and pledged to continue supporting Ukraine. This statement reflects the Greek government’s stance on international relations.

In a separate incident, an explosion occurred in Odessa, Ukraine, approximately 500 meters away from the convoy of President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during their visit to the city. The details and motives behind the explosion are still under investigation.

Overall, Greece’s announcement of the “anti-drone dome” and military reform reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and adapting to evolving security threats. The establishment of an innovative ecosystem within the armed forces demonstrates Greece’s determination to stay at the forefront of technological advancements in defense. This development also aligns with the government’s firm stance on international relations, particularly its support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. The incident in Odessa serves as a reminder of the complex security challenges faced by world leaders, highlighting the importance of robust defense systems.
