Devastating Wildfires Ravage Texas Panhandle: Ranchers Left in Despair as Government Fails to Provide Adequate Support

The devastating wildfires that swept through the Texas Panhandle last week have left ranchers in dire need of assistance. However, amidst the destruction, a glimmer of hope has emerged as individuals and organizations rally together to support those affected.

One such individual is Lee Wells, a rancher from the North Dallas area who understands firsthand the pain and devastation caused by such fires. Having experienced a tragedy on his own ranch several years ago, Wells felt compelled to take action upon seeing the news reports and images of the devastation in the Panhandle.

“I couldn’t just sit around and do nothing,” Wells said. He took to Facebook to ask for donations and set up his own 501(c)(3) organization, leewellsofficial.com, to facilitate the transfer of funds to the ranchers in need. Wells also reached out to the general manager of Northeast Texas Farmers Co-op, a grain mill in Sulphur Springs, to provide much-needed feed for the livestock.

In less than a week, Wells managed to ship 56 tons of multi-purpose grain to the Texas Panhandle, with plans to send another 50 tons in the coming weeks. The response from the community has been overwhelming, with individuals and organizations from across the country stepping up to donate and help the ranchers.

Another organization making a difference is the Rancher Navy, a decentralized group coordinating donations for the ranchers. They have already trucked in nearly 40,000 bales of hay to feed the cattle. Co-founder and co-director Morgan Broome expressed gratitude for the nationwide support, noting that trucks from almost every state in the country have arrived to donate.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Livestock in the burned areas have no access to feed or forage and may not be able to graze for another year. It is crucial to support the ranchers and ensure the continuity of the beef industry across the country.

The wildfires have caused significant damage, with estimates suggesting over 600 structures destroyed. The Smokehouse Creek fire, the largest wildfire in Texas history, has burned approximately 1,700 square miles and spilled into neighboring Oklahoma. While authorities work to contain the blaze, the community must come together to provide support and assistance to those affected.

Tragically, the firefighting efforts have also claimed the life of a Texas fire chief who was battling a house fire. The exact cause of the Smokehouse Creek fire is still under investigation, with a lawsuit alleging a downed powerline sparked the blaze.

In times of crisis, it is heartening to witness the outpouring of support and solidarity from individuals and organizations. Whether it’s Lee Wells and his efforts to provide feed for the ranchers or the Rancher Navy coordinating donations, the spirit of community shines through. Together, we can help rebuild and support those affected by these devastating wildfires.
