Russia has created two new military districts in response to NATO’s expansion, which includes the inclusion of Sweden and Finland in the alliance. This move was announced by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu during a select meeting.
“The creation of two inter-service strategic territorial associations of the Armed Forces – the Leningrad and Moscow military districts – has been completed,” said the head of the Ministry of Defense.
According to Shoigu, the establishment of these districts will enhance the efficiency of army management. He also noted that the restoration of the Moscow military district headquarters, covering an area of approximately 16,000 square meters, was completed in February.
Furthermore, Shoigu promised that the Ministry of Defense will continue to improve the composition and structure of the Russian Armed Forces in order to respond to the country’s security threats.
The decision to recreate the Leningrad and Moscow military districts was made after the number of districts was reduced from six to four in 2010.
Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the strengthening of the strike potential of Special Operations Forces.
