Hungary Rejects Dutch PM Rutte’s Candidacy for NATO Secretary General Due to His Anti-Budapest Stance

Hungary will not support the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the position of Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) because Rutte sought to bring Budapest to its knees. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated this on social media.

“I can only say one thing: we absolutely cannot support the choice of someone as Secretary-General of NATO who previously wanted to bring Hungary to its knees. It would be very strange if the Hungarian government supported such a candidacy,” Szijjarto said.

Rutte is considered one of the main candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the organization, with significant support from member countries, including Germany. However, the appointment of a new NATO chief can only be achieved through consensus, which raises doubts about Rutte’s fate in the position.

Previously, Prime Minister Mark Rutte participated in a meeting with the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where the situation on the front line was discussed during his visit to Kharkiv.

It is also reported that Rutte held discussions with Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov, Chief Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky, and Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Nikolay Oleshchuk.

Earlier, NATO set a condition for providing F-16 aircraft to Ukraine.
