Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Trump, Colorado Republicans Threaten Recall Effort Against State Election Official
The Supreme Court recently handed a significant victory to former President Donald Trump, ruling 9-0 that Colorado cannot prevent him from appearing on the 2024 ballot. In response, Colorado Republicans, led by Rep. Lauren Boebert, have threatened the state’s top election official, Secretary of State Jena Griswold, with a recall effort. They accused her of attempting to disenfranchise millions of Coloradans and called her actions “a stain on our Republic and an outright embarrassment.”
The letter addressed to Secretary Griswold, signed by Boebert, Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams, state party Vice Chair Hope Scheppelman, and Secretary Anna Feguson, expressed zero faith in her ability to protect the right to vote and oversee elections in Colorado. The Republicans claimed that Griswold made a selfish political decision to rig the primary election against Trump and warned that all legal options, including a formal recall effort, are on the table for payback.
Griswold, on the other hand, expressed disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decision. She stated that she believes states should have the power to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists under the Constitution. Griswold emphasized that the decision now leaves it up to American voters to save democracy in the upcoming November elections, as Congress is seen as a nearly non-functioning body.
Colorado had argued that Trump was disqualified from public office under the 14th Amendment for inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. However, the Supreme Court held that states cannot enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars former officeholders who engaged in insurrection, with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency. The court concluded that only Congress has the power to enforce this section.
Trump himself hailed the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision as unifying and inspirational. He expressed his gratitude for the support and emphasized that the ruling is a positive outcome for the American people.
