Russian General Slams ‘Armata’ Tank as Unsuccessful and Unprotected, Calls for Focus on T-80 and T-90 Upgrades

Member of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, General Viktor Sobolev, has called the “Armata” tank a failure and an unprotected tank that is not worth improving. In his opinion, it is better to wait for the completion of the modernization of the T-80 and T-90, after which they will become the best tanks in the world. He stated in an interview with NSN that many tankers do not like the crew placement in the “Armata”.

“We need to protect the entire tank, not just put the crew in a capsule. And the big question is whether they will survive in this capsule in case of an ammunition explosion,” Sobolev explained his opinion. “In addition, the tank must be reliable in terms of management, operation, repairability, and so on. I wouldn’t even bother improving the ‘Armata’, the concept itself is flawed.”

The deputy reminded that work is currently underway to improve the T-90 and T-80 tanks. As a result, according to him, a unified tank will be created, but with different engines.

“After modernization, they will be the best in the world,” Sobolev assured.

It is worth noting that the CEO of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, stated that the T-14 “Armata” tank surpasses existing tanks in its characteristics, but it is unlikely to be used in special operations due to its high cost. According to the head of the state corporation, it is easier for the army to acquire cheaper T-90 tanks. At the same time, he announced that the “Armata” is in service with the Russian Armed Forces.

Earlier, Sobolev argued with Dmitry Medvedev about the division of Ukraine.
