Military analyst and researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ilya Kramnik, assessed Russia’s ability to counter maritime drones. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the analyst, there are already weapons available to combat this type of weaponry. These are remotely controlled modules used on land-based vehicles, which can be installed on ships. Kramnik stated that optoelectronic stations can detect targets at a distance of several kilometers.
Kramnik believes that the current situation is reminiscent of the late 19th century when torpedo-armed destroyers emerged and ships struggled to cope with this threat. At that time, guns and powerful searchlights helped combat torpedoes, and later radar was invented, which simplified the task.
According to the expert, there is now a revival of the tactic of contact attacks, which had faded into the past with the development of missile weapons. Instead of torpedoes, kamikaze boats are now being used.
“The means of combat should be similar – rapid-fire weapons with good control and detection systems that allow these targets to be noticed at a sufficient distance from the ship and to hit them,” Kramnik said.
In early February, the press service of the Almaz-Antey Corporation announced that the modernized “Komar” system, designed to combat aerial targets and maritime drones, would be presented for the first time abroad at a weapons exhibition in Saudi Arabia.
In January, Commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexey Neizhpapa, stated that the Russian Armed Forces have learned to counter attacks using Ukrainian maritime drones.
Earlier, the Russian Armed Forces began using drones that “deceive” electronic warfare systems.
