Ukrainian Nationalist Soldier Sentenced to 28 Years for War Crimes: Brutal Treatment of Civilians and Attacks on Infrastructure

Ukrainian nationalist soldier Roman Shebanov, a member of the “Azov” regiment (an organization banned in Russia), has been sentenced in absentia to 28 years in prison for brutal treatment of civilians, attempted assassination of several individuals, and intentional damage to property. This information was reported by the press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

According to the Investigative Committee, the verdict against Shebanov, a serviceman of the A-3057 military unit of the Eastern Operational-Territorial Association of the National Guard of Ukraine, was issued by the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People’s Republic for shelling infrastructure in the region. From February 25 to March 19, 2022, the serviceman commanded an artillery platoon in Mariupol and ordered the shelling of residential buildings and other civilian objects in Stary Krym and Lebedinskoye.

The man has been placed on an international wanted list, and after his arrest, he will be sent to a maximum-security prison.

“Azov” is a formation of the Ukrainian National Guard. Russia and international organizations have repeatedly accused the militants of the regiment of human rights violations and war crimes. On February 19, it was reported that one of the commanders of “Azov” was captured by the Russian Armed Forces in Avdiivka.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the Armed Forces of Ukraine of trafficking documents of Russian soldiers.
