Finnish Government Rejects American Nuclear Weapons on Its Territory, Believes NATO Provides Sufficient Deterrence

The Finnish authorities do not see the need to deploy American nuclear weapons on their territory. This was stated by the Prime Minister of the Nordic country, Petteri Orpo, in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.

Orpo noted that there is no need to deploy nuclear arsenal, as NATO itself ensures nuclear deterrence. According to him, the alliance already has enough nuclear warheads deployed in several member countries to ensure its security.

Nevertheless, Finland is “carefully preparing to participate in deterring [potential threats to the alliance] with conventional weapons,” the Prime Minister added.

The United States deploys its nuclear arsenal in North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries under the Nuclear Sharing program.

In December of last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that all disputes between Russia and Finland had long been resolved and there were no problems in the relationship between the two countries until Helsinki decided to join NATO. The Russian President hinted that now problems may arise, referring to the creation of the Leningrad Military District. More details can be found in the article on “Gazeta.Ru”.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense stated that Russia will demilitarize NATO countries as part of its military exercises.
