Former President Donald Trump is set to face trial in New York City next month, defending himself against charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. The trial in Washington D.C., which was scheduled for March 4, has been paused as special counsel Jack Smith has asked the Supreme Court to rule on whether Trump can be prosecuted for charges related to the Capitol riot and alleged interference in the 2020 election. Trump has also appealed to the Supreme Court regarding a lower court’s ruling on presidential immunity.
Meanwhile, the trial in New York will proceed as planned, with jury selection set for March 25. Bragg has accused Trump of falsifying New York business records to conceal criminal conduct during the 2016 presidential election. The trial is expected to last approximately six weeks.
Trump is also facing charges related to the alleged improper retention of classified records from his presidency at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. The trial for these charges was initially set to begin on May 20, but U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has indicated that the date may be delayed.
Furthermore, Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis has proposed that her trial against Trump, related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state, begin on August 5. However, Willis has faced scrutiny after it was revealed that she had a romantic relationship with a prosecutor on her team. Trump has dismissed the case as a “sham” and believes it will ultimately be dropped.
