Russian Captain Sacrifices Himself in Heroic Act, Calls for Fire on His Own Position, Surrounded by Enemy Forces

Captain Oleg Pivovarov, the commander of a motorized rifle company, has shared the story of how he found himself surrounded with his unit and ordered his comrades to retreat while drawing fire from the enemy. He then proceeded to unleash a barrage of Grad multiple rocket launchers upon himself. This information was reported by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense in their Telegram channel.

According to the ministry, Captain Pivovarov was awarded the title of Hero of Russia for his actions.

“The Hero of Russia, Captain Oleg Pivovarov, is a young officer who accomplished his feat at the age of 24,” the publication states.

As explained by the press service, Oleg was born in the Amur region but considers Krasnoyarsk, where he has “many relatives,” as his hometown. His father was also mobilized and currently serves in the Donbass.

One hundred years ago, a legendary figure was born, one of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War – Alexander Matrosov. According to the official version, the 19-year-old Komsomol member “fell on the enemy’s firing point and silenced” a German machine gun. He was not the first nor the last soldier to perform such a feat. Some were able to survive. Gazeta.Ru examined their stories and interviewed military historian Evgeny Norin about why and how they would lay down on an embrasure in real combat – and whether such a situation is possible in our time.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense published archival documents about the feat of a Soviet soldier.
