Tragedy Strikes: 88-Year-Old Maine Man Drowns in ATV Mishap on Ice-Covered Lake

Tragedy struck in Maine as an 88-year-old man lost his life in a heartbreaking ATV accident on an ice-covered lake. Floyd Harrison, a resident of Milford, was enjoying a family fishing trip when the ATV he was riding on with his grandson broke through the ice, plunging them into freezing waters. While his grandson managed to escape, Harrison was unable to free himself and tragically drowned in Spring River Lake in Hancock County.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. local time on Friday, according to reports from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. It wasn’t until 8:25 p.m. that a firefighter was able to retrieve Harrison’s body from the depths of the lake. The ATV, unfortunately, sank to the bottom, resting in water that was 10 feet deep.

This devastating accident serves as a reminder of the ever-changing and unpredictable nature of ice conditions on lakes. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife emphasizes the importance of caution and awareness when venturing onto frozen bodies of water. They warn that ice conditions can vary from day to day and from one lake to another.

To determine if it is safe to drive an ATV on an ice-covered lake, the department suggests that the ice should be between five and seven inches thick. They also provide a helpful tip regarding ice color: “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.” These guidelines can assist residents in making informed decisions about their safety.

Unfortunately, there is limited additional information available from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department at this time. However, it is imperative to remember the importance of exercising caution and being fully aware of the potential risks associated with winter activities on frozen lakes.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Floyd Harrison during this difficult time. May he rest in peace, and may this tragic incident serve as a reminder to all of us to prioritize safety and awareness when enjoying outdoor activities during the winter months.
