Israel’s ambassador has accused the United Nations of attempting to “physically exterminate” Palestinians in Gaza following the involvement of UNRWA employees in the October 7 massacre. The Biden administration has recently sent around $121 million in taxpayer funds to UNRWA, despite the agency being under scrutiny for its alleged ties to Hamas. However, the US has frozen an additional $300,000 in funds that were supposed to be delivered to the organization, citing allegations that some UNRWA members participated in the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed the suspension of funding, stating that it is uncertain how much more the US could provide to UNRWA this fiscal year if the funds are unfrozen. Miller also highlighted the historical funding range of $300 to $400 million per year. This move marks a reversal of former President Donald Trump’s decision to cut funding to UNRWA.
UNRWA’s connections to Hamas have gained attention recently, as Israel provided the Biden administration with a dossier containing information about how 13 agency staffers allegedly assisted or supported the October 7 attacks. In response to the dossier, the Biden administration announced a temporary pause on “additional” funding to UNRWA. Several countries, including Germany, Italy, Australia, Finland, Netherlands, and Switzerland, have joined the boycott, resulting in the termination of multiple staffers.
Despite the allegations, the White House has defended UNRWA, emphasizing that the entire agency should not be judged based on the actions of a few individuals. Miller expressed support for UNRWA’s work, particularly in providing critical aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza. He called for a serious investigation by the United Nations, accountability for any wrongdoing, and appropriate measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
The next expected payment to UNRWA is scheduled for the summer and will depend on the amount of money Congress approves in President Biden’s $106 billion supplemental package request.
