Tehran has categorically denied any involvement in a recent drone attack on a logistics support base near the Jordan-Syria border, which resulted in the death of three US military personnel and left many others injured. US President Joe Biden and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron have pointed fingers at Iran-backed groups for the attack, but Iranian officials insist that they have no connection to the incident.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, stated that the resistance groups in the region are independent and act according to their own principles, priorities, and interests. He emphasized that they do not take orders from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Kanaani accused those claiming Iranian involvement of having “specific political goals to reverse the realities of the region” and being influenced by third parties, including Israel.
The Iranian mission to the United Nations echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Tehran had “no connection and had nothing to do” with the attack. They attributed the incident to the conflict between US forces and resistance groups in the region. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of Iran-backed armed groups, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
This drone strike on Tower 22, a logistics support base, marks the first instance of American casualties due to enemy fire since the start of the war in Gaza. President Biden, who has been a staunch supporter of Israel’s war in Gaza, condemned the attack as “despicable and wholly unjust,” promising to hold those responsible accountable “at a time and in a manner [of] our choosing.”
The US has accused Iranian-backed groups of carrying out numerous attacks on its military installations in Iraq and Syria since the beginning of the war. However, it is important to note that the Iranian government continues to deny any direct involvement in these incidents.
