Biden Administration Suspends Funding to UN Agency Amidst Allegations of Involvement in Hamas Attack

In a recent press briefing, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby addressed the allegations that members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East were involved in Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. The State Department announced its concern over these claims, leading to the temporary suspension of additional funding for UNRWA pending a thorough review.

During the exchange with White House correspondent Peter Doocy, Kirby acknowledged the seriousness of the accusations while emphasizing that the actions of a few individuals should not tarnish the reputation of the entire agency. He highlighted the significant humanitarian work carried out by UNRWA, which has saved countless lives in Gaza.

Doocy pressed Kirby for the specific amount of funding provided by the United States to UNRWA, to which Kirby responded that he did not have the exact figure at that moment but assured Doocy that unallocated funds had been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

UNRWA, in response to information provided by Israeli authorities, terminated the contracts of the accused employees and initiated an independent investigation to establish the truth and protect the agency’s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance promptly.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a conversation with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres regarding the investigation, emphasizing the U.S.’s demand for complete accountability for anyone involved in the October 7 attacks.

The U.S. funding to UNRWA will resume once the United Nations completes its comprehensive and independent investigation.

This development underscores the Biden administration’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in international aid efforts. The U.S. government remains determined to support humanitarian initiatives while also holding individuals accountable for any wrongdoing.

It is important to note that this suspension of funding should not be construed as an indictment of the entire UNRWA, as it continues to play a vital role in providing essential assistance to Palestinian refugees in the region.

As the investigation progresses, the U.S. government will closely monitor the situation and take appropriate actions based on the findings. The ultimate goal is to ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered effectively and efficiently to those in need, while also upholding the principles of accountability and justice.

The international community will be watching closely as this investigation unfolds, as it has significant implications for the future of UNRWA and the humanitarian efforts in the region.
