A Mississippi mother and her three children narrowly escaped a potentially tragic situation when they were targeted by a knife-wielding home intruder. According to authorities in Carroll County, the mother managed to protect her family by shooting the suspect in the arm. The incident occurred on Monday when the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Steven Lamar Goss Jr., attempted to break into their home.
Upon hearing Goss banging on their front door, the quick-thinking family retreated to their designated safe room, which happened to be a closet. They hid there and began to pray for their safety. Unfortunately, Goss eventually found them inside the closet, still armed with a knife. In an act of bravery, the mother fired her weapon and struck the intruder in the arm, neutralizing the threat.
Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker commended the family for their preparedness and faith, emphasizing the importance of having an emergency plan in place. He stated, “We can all learn a lot from this family about the importance of having an emergency plan in place in our homes and, most importantly, the power of prayer.”
Prior to the attempted break-in, Goss had initially tried to enter the home through the front door. When he failed, he resorted to ramming his pickup truck into the house, crashing into the dining room. After being shot, Goss fled the scene, and the family’s father promptly contacted the authorities.
Thanks to the father’s detailed description of the suspect and his vehicle, deputies were able to locate a vehicle matching the description. A felony traffic stop was conducted in the parking lot of a grocery store called Acy’s in Greenwood. Goss attempted to escape on foot into the busy store, but law enforcement followed him and apprehended him inside.
During the arrest, it was discovered that Goss had sustained a gunshot wound to his arm. He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Goss, who was already out on felony bond for weapons possession, now faces charges of four counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary.
