Former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley Receives Unanimous Support in Dixville Notch’s Midnight Voting Tradition

In an intriguing twist ahead of the New Hampshire primary, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley has gained unanimous support from all six registered voters in the small unincorporated community of Dixville Notch. This unique midnight voting tradition, which dates back to the 1960 election, saw Dixville Notch as the sole region in the Granite State to cast their ballots during the early hours of primary day.

Typically, two other communities also participate in midnight voting, but this year, Hart’s Location and Millsfield decided to hold their voting during daytime hours. According to Millsfield election official Shawn Cote, the aging population in Millsfield made it increasingly challenging for residents to participate in midnight voting.

Given the small number of voters in Dixville Notch, the process of casting and counting votes is swift, with results immediately reported across the country. In this case, all six voters showed their support for Haley, highlighting her popularity within the community.

It’s worth noting that four of the voters were registered Republicans, while the remaining two were independents. In New Hampshire, registered Republicans and Democrats must vote on a nomination from their respective party, while voters without party affiliation must choose either a Republican or Democrat ballot at the time of voting.

Interestingly, President Biden did not file for the New Hampshire primary, as the state scheduled its Democratic primary ahead of South Carolina. The Democratic National Committee had intended for South Carolina to hold the party’s first primary due to its more diverse population. Nonetheless, New Hampshire Democrats are actively promoting a write-in campaign to elect Biden.

The outcome of Dixville Notch’s midnight voting tradition provides an early indication of the level of support for various candidates. As the 2024 campaign trail unfolds, it will be interesting to see how this momentum translates into broader political dynamics.
