In a recent development, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected a proposal put forth by Hamas to end the ongoing war between the two parties. The proposal suggested that Israel withdraw its forces, release captives, and accept the armed group’s governance of Gaza in exchange for peace. However, Netanyahu, who is facing mounting pressure domestically to bring the captives home, dismissed Hamas’ conditions, stating that accepting them would leave the armed group “intact” and imply that the sacrifices made by Israel’s soldiers had been in vain.
Netanyahu openly voiced his strong opposition to an independent Palestinian state, emphasizing that he would not compromise on Israel’s security control over the entire area in the west of Jordan. This stance further complicates relations with the administration of United States President Joe Biden, as differences continue to cloud their diplomatic ties.
The Israeli leader finds himself under pressure from various fronts. Families of the captives are fervently calling for a deal to secure the safe return of their loved ones, while members of Netanyahu’s far-right ruling coalition advocate for an escalation of the war. Amidst these challenges, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum initiated a protest outside Netanyahu’s private residence in Jerusalem, vowing not to leave until a deal on the captives’ release is reached. The group insists that if the prime minister chooses to sacrifice the hostages, he should openly communicate his position to the Israeli public.
Reportedly, the protesters feel neglected and forgotten by their government, highlighting a sense of disillusionment among the Israeli populace. Additionally, dissent emerges from within the war cabinet, with one member suggesting that achieving a total defeat of Hamas may not be a realistic goal, and that elections should be held to gauge public confidence in the government.
It is worth noting that Hamas had previously released over 100 captives in exchange for the release of 240 Palestinian prisoners during a brief truce brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the US in late November. However, the armed group still holds 136 individuals in captivity, according to Israeli officials.
