Hunter Biden to Sit for Deposition in House Impeachment Inquiry as Contempt Threat Looms

In a significant development, Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is set to appear for a deposition as part of the House impeachment inquiry against his father. This comes after Hunter Biden defied a congressional subpoena, putting him at risk of being held in contempt of Congress. The House Judiciary Committee has announced the newly-scheduled deposition date, which is set for February 28, 2024.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan confirmed the deposition date and expressed their anticipation for Hunter Biden’s testimony. They also revealed that several interviews with Biden family members and associates have already taken place. Additionally, the committees have announced that other witnesses, including Hunter Biden’s business partners Mervyn Yan and Rob Walker, will testify on January 22, Eric Schwerin and Joey Langston on January 29, and Hunter Biden’s former business partner Tony Bobulinski on February 5.

This development comes after the House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee passed resolutions to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying the subpoena. However, Hunter Biden’s attorneys offered to discuss scheduling a new deposition, which House Republicans were open to. It is worth noting that Hunter Biden had previously offered to testify publicly, but his request was rejected by Comer and Jordan, who emphasized that he would receive no special treatment compared to other witnesses.

In response to the committees’ resolutions, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, requested that a new subpoena be issued, arguing that the initial subpoenas were “legally invalid” as they were issued before the full House of Representatives voted to formalize the impeachment inquiry against President Biden. In a letter to the committees, Lowell stated that if a new proper subpoena was issued, Hunter Biden would comply with a hearing or deposition.

The committees welcomed Hunter Biden’s willingness to testify under subpoena and agreed to issue new subpoenas for his deposition. The deposition is expected to take place in the coming weeks. House Republicans, including Comer and Jordan, have vowed to release the transcript of Hunter Biden’s deposition.

This development adds another layer to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the Biden family and their business dealings. As the impeachment inquiry progresses, the testimony of Hunter Biden and other witnesses will likely provide crucial insights into the allegations against President Biden.
