Former Russian Armed Forces Commander Sentenced to 10 Years for Negligence in Ammunition Depot Explosion

Former Russian Armed Forces Commander, Alexander Kojevnikov, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for his involvement in the explosion at an ammunition depot in the town of Zheltukhino in 2020. The decision was made by the Ryazan Garrison Military Court, as reported by TASS.

Initially, Kojevnikov was charged with abuse of power, which carries a punishment of ten years. However, the court determined that the former commander was responsible under Article 293, Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code, which pertains to negligence leading to serious harm to health or death. The court’s verdict states that Kojevnikov will be prohibited from holding positions in the Armed Forces and related economic activities.

“In accordance with Article 73 of the Russian Criminal Code (conditional conviction), the punishment imposed on Kojevnikov in the form of imprisonment is considered conditional with a probationary period of three years, during which he must demonstrate his rehabilitation through his behavior,” the court decision stated.

This case follows a recent conviction of a military personnel in Sakhalin who refused to obey orders during mobilization.

Previously, another military officer, who was injured in the line of duty, faced legal action for being absent from his unit due to hospitalization.
