Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a passionate appeal to the West, urging them to tighten sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and step up their support for Kyiv. In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy expressed his concerns about the Western hesitation in supporting Ukraine and the potential escalation of the war with Russia. He emphasized that this hesitation not only costs time and lives but could also prolong the fighting for years.
Zelenskyy called on Europeans to understand that Putin’s plans extend beyond the war in Ukraine, stating, “In fact, Putin embodies war… We must change to the extent that the madness that resides in this man’s head or any other aggressor’s head will not prevail.” He strongly opposed the idea of freezing the conflict along its current lines, asserting that Putin is a predator who is not satisfied with “frozen products.”
The Ukrainian leader also highlighted the need for proper enforcement of sanctions on Moscow, pointing out the West’s weakness in failing to impose sanctions on Russia’s nuclear sector. European Union and NATO leaders echoed Zelenskyy’s concerns, emphasizing the importance of supplying Ukraine with weapons and financial support to ensure its success.
European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen advised that Ukrainians need predictable financing and a sustained supply of weapons to defend their country and regain its rightful territory.
