Former NYPD Sgt. Pete Panuccio has raised concerns about the persistence of a culture of fear in New York City, despite city leaders boasting about a drop in crime rates. Panuccio’s remarks come in the wake of a tragic incident where a 45-year-old grandfather, Richard Henderson, was shot dead while attempting to intervene in a dispute between two fellow subway passengers. The incident occurred on Sunday evening on a 3 Train in Brooklyn.
According to the NYPD, the argument between the two straphangers initially started over loud music. Henderson, in an effort to restore peace, stepped in, but the individual responsible for the music reportedly pulled out a gun and fired, hitting Henderson in the back and shoulder. It remains unclear whether the shooter intended to target Henderson or the other person involved in the argument.
Henderson, a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan from Crown Heights, was returning home from a social gathering where he had been watching football with friends. One of his companions on the train revealed that the shooter had also attempted to shoot him. The shooter fled the train at the Rockway Avenue subway station in Brownsville, while Henderson’s friend immediately raised the alarm.
Authorities discovered Henderson’s body when the train reached the Franklin Avenue subway station, several stops later. He was subsequently transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Henderson, who leaves behind a wife, three children, and two grandchildren, had worked as a school crossing guard for over a decade.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Henderson’s family has expressed their shock and grief, describing him as a kind-hearted individual who always sought to help others. They have called for justice and emphasized his role as a devoted family man, having been with his wife for 30 years.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched by students and staff at the Avenues The World School, where Henderson worked. The campaign aims to support his family during this difficult time and has already garnered nearly $40,000 in donations.
