The United Kingdom is considering launching strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen following their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, according to The Times. The UK’s Defense Minister, Grant Shapps, stated that this situation cannot continue and that they will not allow it to. He emphasized the unacceptable nature of the attacks on ships in the Red Sea, which is one of the main maritime trade routes.
The Times reports that the US-led coalition is planning to strike key Houthi bases and ships using fighter jets and warships. The journalists note that Britain could provide its military aircraft, based at the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, to assist in these operations.
The UN Security Council recently adopted a resolution proposed by the US and Japan, demanding an immediate halt to Houthi attacks on ships. The resolution condemns the attacks on trade and commercial vessels, which have occurred at least twenty times since November 19, 2023.
The leader of the Houthi Supreme Revolutionary Committee, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, dismissed this resolution as a political game and accused the US of violating international law.
Previously, the Houthis announced their intention to attack commercial ships in the Red Sea every 12 hours.
