A successful multi-agency investigation in Florida has led to the arrest of 11 individuals involved in two major drug trafficking rings. The operation, led by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, resulted in the seizure of a significant amount of fentanyl, enough to cause harm to over 1.7 million people. The collaborative effort involved federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, highlighting the determination to combat drug-related crimes.
During a press conference, Sheriff Judd emphasized the urgency of winning the battle against fentanyl, which he described as a killer that has caused thousands of deaths across the country. The arrested individuals were linked to the Colon-Colon Drug Trafficking Organization and the Espinoza & Romero Central Florida Drug Trafficking Organization.
The operation resulted in the confiscation of 14 kilos of cocaine, 3.5 kilos of bulk fentanyl, fentanyl pills, four firearms, a vehicle, and $12,985 in U.S. currency. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) played a crucial role in coordinating the investigation and providing support to the other agencies involved.
Among those arrested, five men were associated with the Espinoza & Romero Central Florida Drug Trafficking Organization. It was revealed that all of the 11 individuals were legally residing in the United States, with most having Puerto Rican descent. Many of them had prior criminal records, further underscoring the importance of the operation in dismantling these drug trafficking networks.
The investigations uncovered that Maximo Espinosa of Kissimmee was operating a drug trafficking organization spanning the northeast U.S., South Florida, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. The organization was involved in the trafficking of cocaine and fentanyl. Authorities discovered that Espinosa had previously been arrested by federal authorities for armed trafficking of heroin.
The State Financial Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication (SAFE) program, managed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, played a significant role in supporting the investigations. The program, established by the Florida Legislature, aims to combat the illegal trafficking of fentanyl.
Sheriff Judd expressed his concern over the devastating impact of drug trafficking on individuals, families, and communities. He reiterated the association of these drugs with violence and misery and emphasized the need for continued efforts to eradicate such criminal activities.
This successful operation serves as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies in Florida to protect communities and combat the destructive influence of drug trafficking.
