Republican Lawmakers Call for No Confidence Vote on DHS Secretary Mayorkas Over Handling of Migrant Surge

Rep. John James, R-Mich., joined ‘Fox & Friends First’ to discuss the Biden administration’s handling of the migrant surge and the White House’s stance on Secretary Austin’s secretive hospital stay. FIRST ON FOX: Sen. Roger Marshall, R-M.D., will lead a resolution on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon calling for a vote of “no confidence” of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Republican lawmakers have been critical of Mayorkas’s handling of the southern border, as illegal immigrant crossings reached a record high last month. The resolution comes just days before the House launches an impeachment hearing into the DHS secretary over his handling of the southern border.

According to sources from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), there were over 300,000 migrant encounters at the end of December, marking a historical record for crossings in a single month. Republican lawmakers argue that Secretary Mayorkas is failing to enforce immigration laws and is instead fueling the surge at the border. They point to the termination of effective border policies such as catch and release, Remain in Mexico, Title 42, and the exploitation of parole and asylum loopholes, which have allowed over 6 million migrants to live in the United States without proper vetting and with court dates years away.

Senator Marshall, a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, plans to highlight Mayorkas’s alleged refusal to enforce immigration laws passed by Congress and his misleading statements to the American people and Congress. Marshall claims that Mayorkas lacks operational control over the borders, and his actions not only jeopardize national security but also violate the law.

The resolution calling for a vote of “no confidence” in Mayorkas is seen as a significant step by Republican lawmakers who believe that his handling of the migrant surge is a crisis that demands urgent attention. The resolution will be followed by a press conference with Senator Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and other GOP senators.

In a recent private meeting with Border Patrol agents in Texas, Mayorkas reportedly acknowledged that over 85% of apprehended illegal immigrants are being released into the United States. This admission contradicts his previous statement on a news program where he claimed that individuals released into the country are part of immigration enforcement proceedings and alternatives to detention. The remarks made by Mayorkas during this meeting further fuel Republican lawmakers’ concerns about his ability to enforce immigration laws effectively.

The call for a “no confidence” vote on Secretary Mayorkas reflects the growing frustration among Republican lawmakers regarding the Biden administration’s handling of the migrant surge and its impact on national security. With over 10 million illegal migrants entering the country under this administration’s watch, the urgency to address the crisis at the border is paramount.

Overall, this resolution and the subsequent impeachment hearing against Mayorkas highlight the deep divide between Republicans and Democrats over immigration policies and border security. The outcome of these proceedings will have significant implications not only for Mayorkas but also for the Biden administration’s approach to immigration moving forward.
