European Union to Discuss Launching Military Mission in the Red Sea

The European Union will begin discussions this week regarding the launch of its own military mission in the Red Sea, according to Peter Stano, the spokesperson for the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, as reported by TASS.

Stano stated that Borrell will present a proposal for the launch of a separate EU military mission in the Red Sea. He further mentioned that EU member states will start discussing this issue at the end of the current week.

To initiate such a mission, Stano emphasized the need for unanimous agreement within the EU Council. While most EU countries have declined to participate in the US-led operation in the Red Sea, Stano affirmed that they will act in close coordination with the United States.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the attacks by the Houthi rebels, also known as Ansar Allah, in the Red Sea, are affecting the interests of over 40 countries and disrupting nearly 20% of global maritime transportation.

Prior to this, Lloyd Austin, the head of the Pentagon, announced the start of an operation to protect the Red Sea from Houthi attacks on commercial vessels carrying goods.

Former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev had previously mentioned the prospect of a century-long war in the Middle East.
