House Democrats Accuse Republican Governors of Creating a Humanitarian Crisis in New Jersey

Kinney County, Texas Sheriff Brad Coe sheds light on the ongoing border crisis and its impact on the state. In a recent development, a group of House Democrats from New Jersey has voiced their concerns, accusing Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other Republican border state governors of thrusting a “humanitarian crisis” upon the Garden State. Officials in New Jersey have reported that buses carrying undocumented migrants have been dropped off at various NJ Transit train stations in recent days, with many of these families subsequently making their way to New York City.

To address this growing issue, New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order in December, mandating that charter bus companies must provide at least 32 hours’ notice before dropping off migrants in the sanctuary city. In a letter addressed to Democratic Governor Phil Murphy, four lawmakers from the New Jersey Delegation in Congress expressed their desire to work together in resolving the humanitarian crisis caused by the influx of migrants from southern states.

The group specifically named Governor Abbott, who was the first Republican governor of a border state to send migrants to Democrat-run cities in an attempt to alleviate the strain on Texas communities. The lawmakers accused Abbott and other governors of prioritizing political motives over the well-being of the individuals involved. However, they also emphasized the responsibility of Americans to assist those fleeing from conflicts, wars, and disasters.

In their letter, the House Democrats sought clarification from Governor Murphy on whether there has been any communication between his office and the Republican governors responsible for the buses. They also inquired about the resources being provided to the migrants and the localities where they are being dropped off. Additionally, the lawmakers requested a meeting with Governor Murphy to discuss plans for handling the incoming buses.

The letter was signed by New Jersey Democratic Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Donald Payne Jr., Bill Pascrell Jr., and Rob Menendez. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Eric Adams implemented an executive order to address the flow of migrants into his city.

Governor Murphy’s office released a statement indicating that the recent buses carrying migrant families were primarily using New Jersey as a transit point, with most continuing their journey to their final destination in New York City. The statement also highlighted the administration’s close coordination with federal and local partners to address the matter.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Governor Abbott’s office regarding the letter have been unsuccessful at the time of writing.
