Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s Relationship with China Under Scrutiny

Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe has raised concerns about an intelligence report suggesting that China interfered in the 2022 elections. In a recent interview on “The Ingraham Angle,” Ratcliffe discussed the issue with host Laura Ingraham. However, this report sheds light on a previous partnership between the Chinese government and the state of South Carolina during Nikki Haley’s tenure as governor.

According to a memorandum from March 2015, the South Carolina Department of Education collaborated with the Beijing International Education Exchange (BIEE), a group led by the Chinese communist government. The memorandum stated that invitations were extended to 20 secondary school students from across South Carolina to attend the 5th Beijing International Student Summer Camp. The trip, fully funded by BIEE, offered students an “amazing opportunity” to experience Beijing while covering all expenses, including accommodations, meals, local transportation, tuition, and local activities.

However, concerns have been raised about the Beijing Municipal Education Commission’s affiliation with the Communist Party of China. The government of Beijing confirmed that the commission operates under the centralized leadership of the Education Committee of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China. Additionally, the Chinese embassy’s website states that the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China represents the party to the rest of the world and implements its resolutions.

Critics, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have accused Haley of being too friendly with China. DeSantis previously claimed that Haley “rolled out the red carpet” for the Chinese Communist Party. During a GOP presidential debate, he also highlighted Haley’s efforts in recruiting a Chinese-owned company to South Carolina and delivering a favorable speech while standing next to a Chinese flag.

In response to these accusations, Haley has defended her relationship with China, stating that she considers China a friend. While serving as governor, she praised the “strong relationship” between South Carolina and China and expressed gratitude for China’s contributions to the state’s economy. Haley has also stated that she would not allow China to threaten or intimidate American businesses if elected to the White House in 2024.

The South Carolina Department of Education has confirmed that the summer camp program with BIEE expired several years ago. However, questions remain about the implications of the partnership and whether it had any influence on Haley’s stance towards China.

As the 2024 campaign trail heats up, Haley currently polls at 16.1% in Iowa, placing her in third place behind former President Trump and Governor DeSantis. Her relationship with China could become a significant topic of discussion as the race continues.
