A Colorado suspect carrying more than $8,000 worth of stolen items from a plumbing store was detained after police caught him attempting to use an Uber as a getaway vehicle. The incident occurred in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, last week when the suspect stole tools from a local plumbing store and requested an Uber to pick him up.
The owner of the store called 911 after discovering a hole in the property’s fencing and captured surveillance footage of the suspect stealing tools. Wheat Ridge Police responded to the call and upon arriving at the scene, found an Uber driver waiting nearby who informed them that his passenger, identified as Jose, was heading towards the vehicle.
Body camera footage released by the police shows an officer asking the suspect, who was wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood up and a black ski mask, if he was looking for an Uber. The suspect hesitantly denies it and attempts to walk away from the officers. However, the officers apprehended him, suspecting him to be the thief based on his description.
Inside the suspect’s backpack, officers discovered more than $8,600 worth of stolen electric tools. It was later confirmed through fingerprint scanners that the suspect’s real name is Jose. He was booked the following day on several charges, including theft of more than $2,000, criminal trespassing, and false reporting to authorities, according to court records.
The Wheat Ridge Police humorously commented on the incident, stating, “It may not be the best idea to have an Uber pick you up AT the crime scene.” This serves as a reminder that attempting to use a ride-sharing service as a getaway vehicle is not a foolproof plan.
