Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell has decided not to investigate the event despite receiving four complaints. The party, which was meant for six city council members “of color,” was mistakenly sent to all councilors, including seven who are White.
The complaints against Mayor Wu cited potential violations of the Massachusetts Public Accommodation Law, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, and other factors. However, the Attorney General’s Office stated that since the event was not open to the public, it does not violate the law. As a result, no investigation will be conducted.
Although Mayor Wu has faced criticism for the event, she has defended it thus far. Her assistant, who accidentally sent the email invitation to all staff, quickly apologized for any offense caused. Mayor Wu herself acknowledged the mistake and emphasized that it was an honest error. She also highlighted that there are other inclusive holiday parties where all elected officials, including White councilors, are invited.
