Armed Suspect Arrested at Colorado Supreme Court Building Amid Controversy Over Trump’s Primary Ballot Ban

An armed suspect was arrested at the Colorado Supreme Court building in Denver after a dramatic incident that involved shooting out windows, holding an armed security guard at gunpoint, and maneuvering through the building for nearly two hours. The incident occurred shortly after the Colorado high court ruled that former President Donald Trump should be removed from the 2024 GOP primary ballot, sparking controversy. However, authorities have stated that there is no evidence linking the incident to the recent threats against the Colorado Supreme Court Justices.

The episode began with a two-vehicle crash at 13th Street and Lincoln in Denver around 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday. One individual involved in the crash allegedly pointed a handgun at the other driver, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Shortly after, the same individual shot out a window on the east side of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center and entered the building. Inside, the suspect encountered an unarmed security guard from the Colorado State Patrol Capitol Security Unit and held the guard at gunpoint, demanding access to other parts of the building.

The suspect obtained keys from the security guard and proceeded to other parts of the building, accessing multiple floors. Denver Police Department officers and Colorado State Patrol Troopers responded to the scene, establishing a perimeter. The suspect eventually made his way to the 7th floor, where he fired additional shots inside the building.

At approximately 3 a.m., the suspect called 911 and voluntarily surrendered to the police. He was taken into custody without incident, and there were no reported injuries to building occupants, the suspect, or police personnel. The suspect was subsequently taken to a local hospital for clearance by medical personnel. The building suffered significant and extensive damage, and the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities have emphasized that while they are treating the incident seriously, they do not believe it is connected to previous threats against the Colorado Supreme Court Justices. The identity of the suspect and potential charges he might face have not been released at this time.

The incident comes amid a heated debate over the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 GOP primary ballot. The ruling has divided the court along elite East Coast law schools and Denver law lines. RFK Jr., a well-known figure in conservative circles, has issued a stark warning, stating that the country will become ungovernable as a result of the court’s decision.

As the investigation into Tuesday’s incident continues, it remains to be seen what impact, if any, it will have on the ongoing controversy surrounding Trump’s primary ballot ban. Meanwhile, the state’s law enforcement agencies are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Colorado Supreme Court and its justices.
