Pro-Palestinian protesters caused major disruptions at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports in New York City on one of the busiest travel days of the year. The demonstrators, driving in a caravan, snarled traffic and chanted slogans criticizing the NYPD, KKK, and IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). Videos captured the protesters shouting through bullhorns and waving Palestinian flags. The Port Authority responded by shutting down all entrances to JFK for those without a boarding pass and closing Airtrain services. Cars were also required to show proof of a ticket to enter the terminal. The group behind the caravan, “Within Our Lifetime,” reported that organizers were forcibly removed from Terminal 4.
The caravan later headed towards LaGuardia Airport, blocking lanes and causing delays. NYPD Chief of Transportation Chief Philip Rivera urged travelers to plan ahead and arrive at the airport early. LaGuardia Airport issued warnings to allow for extra time due to police activity. In a further protest, the group called on supporters to gather at the offices of El-Al, the largest airline in Israel, located at 100 Wall Street in Manhattan. Approximately 150 protesters were seen chanting, holding signs, and waving flags.
Despite their efforts, the caravan was criticized by Council Inna Vernikov, who referred to them as “Hamasnicks” and claimed that they achieved nothing but annoyance for New Yorkers. The Port Authority, along with local, state, and federal partners, worked to ensure an uninterrupted travel experience at JFK. The PAPD (Port Authority Police Department) did not make any arrests, and AirTrain service was eventually resumed, with access to Terminal 4 restored.
This demonstration follows a similar incident the previous week, where pro-Palestinian protesters temporarily blocked entrance roads to airports in New York and Los Angeles. A total of 62 people were arrested during those protests. The situation remains tense as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.
