Maine Republican State Representative John Andrews has announced his intention to pursue impeachment against Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who recently disqualified former President Donald Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot. The decision by Bellows has sparked controversy and criticism from Republicans, who argue that it is a partisan move aimed at preventing Trump from running for office again.
In her ruling, Bellows cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits individuals who have “engaged in insurrection” from holding public office. Andrews argues that Trump has not been convicted of any crime or impeached, and therefore should be allowed to appear on the Republican primary ballot.
Speaking to Digital, Andrews expressed his frustration with the process of selecting the Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Treasurer in Maine, stating that they are chosen by elected Democrat Party insiders behind closed doors. He criticized Bellows for not remaining neutral and accused her of prioritizing the interests of registered Democrats over the citizens of Maine.
Andrews further emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of a republic and accused Bellows of undermining the democratic process by barring an American citizen and the 45th President of the United States from appearing on the ballot. He described Bellows’ decision as an act of hyper-partisanship and compared it to a banana republic.
Despite their political differences, Democratic Representative Jared Golden also criticized Bellows’ move, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law. Golden stated that unless Trump is found guilty of the crime of insurrection, he should be allowed on the ballot.
In response to the criticism, Bellows defended her decision during a CNN interview, stating that the events of January 6, 2021, were an unprecedented attack on the Capitol and the rule of law. She argued that the weight of evidence indicated that it was an insurrection and that Trump had engaged in it, making him ineligible under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
Bellows’ decision in Maine mirrors a similar ruling by Colorado’s highest court, which also barred Trump from that state’s primary ballot. The decision in Colorado has been challenged by the Colorado GOP and may ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
