In a shocking case of animal cruelty and neglect, a woman from Frostproof, Florida, has been arrested after authorities discovered 164 birds, 142 cats, and three dogs in appalling conditions on her property. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check on a 75-year-old woman living in what was described as a “hoarder situation” with cats inside the house.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered 48-year-old Lisa Lacharite, who claimed to be the caregiver for her mother. She allowed the deputy to enter the premises to check on her mother, but the strong smell of ammonia outside raised concerns. Upon entering the home, the deputy was met with an overwhelming stench and witnessed 50 cats freely roaming around, climbing on furniture, and even sitting on kitchen counters.
Further investigation revealed wire cages on the enclosed porch containing malnourished and sick chickens, peacocks, and ducks. The ammonia levels inside the house were measured between 70 and 100 parts per million, well above the hazardous threshold of 50 ppm for both humans and animals.
