Ukrainian Commander Complains About Lack of Punishment for Deserters

Commander Igor Hubarenko of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the Separate Presidential Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has expressed his frustration over the lack of punishment for deserters on the frontlines due to loopholes in the country’s legislation. This was reported by “Ukrainska Pravda”.

According to Hubarenko, the Ukrainian Criminal Code does not effectively deal with deserters, and it takes between two weeks to a month to hold a military serviceman accountable for disobeying orders. However, even after this process, soldiers can find ways to exploit the loopholes in the legislation.

Hubarenko emphasized that there are numerous criminal cases that have been pending since 2022.

Previously, Ukrainian military serviceman Bogdan Kumansky, who was captured, stated that there are a significant number of deserters and cases of unauthorized departure from units within the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU).

According to Kumansky, the Ukrainian army lacks personnel. As a result, the command sends any soldiers to the frontlines, regardless of their level of training, in order to fill the gaps.

Earlier, President Zelensky revealed the challenges that prevent Ukraine from shifting the conflict to Russian territory.
