Ukrainian Forces Planned to Blockade Melitopol and Advance towards Crimea, Says Russian General

In a recent statement, General Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and Deputy Minister of Defense, revealed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had planned to block Melitopol and advance towards Crimea during their counteroffensive. This information comes amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea by Russia.

According to Gerasimov, the Ukrainian forces intended to take control of Melitopol within 15 days. To achieve this objective, the Ukrainian command concentrated an offensive group consisting of up to 50 battalions, over 230 tanks, and more than a thousand armored vehicles, half of which were modern Western-made models.

Gerasimov further stated that the Ukrainian group was later expanded to 80 battalions. In response to this threat, the Russian forces had to undertake extensive measures to create a layered system of engineering obstacles, defensive lines, and positions.

It is worth noting that the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, officially joined the Russian Federation following referendums held in September 2022. As a result, a state of war has been declared in these regions since October 20.

Earlier, Roman Chegrinets, a member of the Assembly of Slavic Peoples in Crimea, remarked that instead of Crimea, Ukraine would be left with a hole in the donut.

This latest revelation sheds light on the strategic plans and intentions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the conflict in Ukraine. The information provided by General Gerasimov emphasizes the scale and ambition of the Ukrainian offensive operations, which aimed to regain control over Crimea. However, it also highlights the measures taken by the Russian forces to counter this threat and protect their territorial integrity.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been a subject of international concern, with various geopolitical implications. The actions and strategies of both the Ukrainian and Russian forces have drawn attention and criticism from the global community. The situation in Ukraine remains complex and fluid, with the aftermath of the conflict still unfolding.
