Putin: Only 20% of Russian College Graduates are Enlisted in the Army

Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that only 20% of graduates from Russian colleges are being called up for compulsory military service. These remarks were reported by the state news agency TASS.

“In Russia, out of 800,000 graduates from technical schools and colleges, only 20% are enlisted for compulsory military service,” explained Putin.

The President’s response came in answer to a question about how often those graduates who were admitted to educational institutions through targeted recruitment are called up for service.

Member of the State Duma Defense Committee, Viktor Sobolev, had previously stated that due to the challenging military-political situation in the country, it is necessary to extend the length of military service to two years.

The official emphasized that the final decision would depend on the President’s resolution. Currently, the term of compulsory military service is one year.

In October, Russian conscripts were permitted to sign contracts for service in the Federal Security Service (FSB).

However, in November, the Ministry of Education and Science announced the possibility of reducing the duration of studies for graduates of Russian colleges. The department noted that accelerated learning is allowed by law.

Earlier, the State Duma called for medical examinations for conscripts starting from the age of 14.
