Quick-Thinking Deputies Save 5-Year-Old Girl’s Life After Accidental Shooting

A group of deputies from Florida is being hailed as heroes after their quick actions likely saved the life of a 5-year-old girl who accidentally shot herself in the leg. The incident occurred in Deltona when the kindergartner gained access to a shotgun under a family member’s bed.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office responded to the emergency call and found the girl conscious and alert but bleeding from her injuries. Bodycam footage, which has been blurred to protect the child’s identity, captured the moment when first responders can be heard urgently requesting a tourniquet.

Deputies Maletto, Kagle, Williams, Estrada, and Rodriguez acted swiftly to administer aid, apply a tourniquet, and carry the child out to Deltona Fire Rescue. The girl was then transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where medical staff credited the quick response and care she received with saving her life.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed his admiration for the deputies’ actions, stating, “The hair on the back of my neck stood up listening to these deputies render aid to this 5-year-old girl. What an outstanding example of decisive action and compassion by all involved.” Chitwood plans to award medals to all the deputies involved for their life-saving efforts.

Detectives are currently investigating the incident, and their findings will be forwarded to the state attorney’s office for review.

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication exhibited by law enforcement officers in protecting and serving their communities.
