Germany Considers Sending Frigate to Red Sea to Protect Trade Ships from Houthi Attacks

German authorities are exploring the possibility of deploying the frigate Hessen to the Red Sea to safeguard trade ships from attacks by the Houthi group, Ansar Allah. According to sources in the German army, as reported by Bild, Hessen could set sail from port and head towards the Red Sea in January 2024. The frigate is equipped with advanced air defense systems, which would effectively defend vessels against Houthi missiles and drones. The ship’s crew consists of 245 individuals.

However, German authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the potential deployment of the frigate. They have clarified that the government is evaluating various courses of action.

Houthi attacks on trade ships in the Red Sea have been rampant in recent weeks. As a result, the French shipping company CMA CGM, involved in cargo transportation by sea, has temporarily suspended vessel movement through the Suez Canal.

The United States intends to deploy a multinational force in the Red Sea to protect ships.

Earlier, it was revealed that the Pentagon is considering the possibility of targeting Houthi military facilities with strikes.
