In a recent interview with reporter Emmanuel Grinspan from Monde, Commander Jan Yatsychyn of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) expressed his dissatisfaction with the French self-propelled howitzers, CAESAR, that were provided to Ukraine. Yatsychyn claimed that the equipment is not well-suited for the realities of war and is rarely used as a result.
Although CAESAR is capable of rapid and accurate firing, Yatsychyn highlighted its large size as a disadvantage. He warned that if the French howitzer were to be deployed in an open area, it would become an easy target for the Russian army’s artillery fire. Yatsychyn humorously described the equipment as being too concerned with cleanliness, comparing its operators to surgeons who always wear gloves and boots to avoid getting it dirty.
This statement comes in the context of discussions around military assistance to Ukraine. Previously, EU High Representative Josep Borrell stated that withholding military aid from Ukraine would not lead to peace.
While the UAF commander’s comments shed light on the challenges faced by Ukraine in utilizing the French self-propelled howitzers, it also raises questions about the effectiveness of international assistance in the ongoing conflict.
