U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. David Walsh joins ‘FOX & Friends’ to celebrate the 248th birthday of the military branch. The Marine shower facility at the center of a viral video has been shut down for repairs and quarantined off. A video posted on Instagram showcased the presence of black mold on the walls and ceilings of the facility at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. This facility is part of the School of Infantry-east, which is located in Camp Lejeune. According to a military spokesperson, the mold issue was caused by a faulty air conditioning system. The affected service members have been provided with an alternate facility to use.
The spokesperson, Maj. Josh Pena, explained that the School of Infantry has been monitoring their buildings, but acknowledged that it is time for refurbishment. Health professionals have been deployed to test the facility and determine the extent of the mold issue. However, Pena clarified that the area shown in the video had already been quarantined off before the clip was filmed. He stated, “The students went into an area that was quarantined.”
This incident adds to the growing scrutiny faced by the military regarding the living conditions of some troops, especially younger members residing in dorm-like facilities. A recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) exposed poor living conditions, including pest infestations, toxic waste, and squatters. In a particularly distressing case, service members were responsible for cleaning up biological waste following a suicide.
The Marines have taken immediate action in response to the mold issue. The shower facility has been included in the refurbishment list and will undergo testing and repairs. Additionally, other buildings will be inspected to ensure they do not face similar problems. The School of Infantry has proactively checked all their buildings as a precautionary measure.
It is important for the military to address and rectify these issues promptly to provide a safe and comfortable living environment for the service members.
